NHS Benefits of Membership and Admission

Benefits of Membership...

“College admissions officers often look for Honor Society membership as a valid indicator that the applicant will succeed at the collegiate level of post-secondary education. The Honor Society member has already proven that he or she is able to achieve with academic endeavors, leadership, honorable, and admirable character, as well as service that demonstrates that the member is willing to use talents and skills for the improvement of society.” -National Honor Society Handbook

Becoming a Member...

Students who wish to become a member can effectively increase their chances of being selected by adhering to the following suggestions:

  • Maintain high academic standards at school.

  • Challenge themselves by taking advanced-level courses.

  • Become a meaningful part of several high school extra-curricular groups. Athletic participation is equally important, but a commitment to community service must be evident.

  • Seek opportunities for leadership by running for offices, chairing committees, using leadership skills in the classroom, etc.

  • Maintain high moral and ethical standards at school and in the community. Be aware that cheating on tests, sharing homework, skipping class, etc is often noted by teachers and may be brought up during the selection process.

  • Take part in the community and/or church activities, all these volunteer opportunities can be written in on a resumé or application for NHS.

  • Seek opportunities to serve. Tutoring a student in need, helping on a volunteer basis at a retirement home, babysitting, raking leaves for the elderly, working at the public library, etc.

Qualifications and Selection Process

Membership in the local chapter of NHS is an honor bestowed upon a student. Selection for membership is based upon the following criteria:

  • The student must have a 3.5 un-weighted overall GPA to be eligible academically, must be a member of eleventh or twelfth grade in the next school year and must have been in attendance at Oasis High School for at least one full semester immediately prior to applying. (Unless previously a member in good standing at another school or your former principal writes a letter of recommendation, then this rule can be waived).

  • All eligible students will be issued an invitation to fill out an application for membership (forms, essay, and recommendations). The application is not a guarantee of membership and must be returned to the advisor by the stated deadline. Members are cautioned to fill out the entire application. Incomplete, messy, or incorrect applications may affect the committee’s decision. Applications received after the deadline are not eligible for the selection process.

  • A faculty committee will next review all applications that are returned by the deadline and will reserve the right to award membership based upon their assessments of the applicant’s commitment to service, leadership, and character. If necessary, disciplinary records will be consulted and additional faculty members may be contacted.

  • Candidates will be notified of their selection by letter. At this point in time candidates may choose to decline membership. However, this is the final opportunity.
